Personalized, Comfortable Experiences
Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to appear in the mouth, commonly showing up between the ages of 17 and 25. If there is not enough room in the mouth for these teeth to erupt properly, they can cause problems by growing at an angle or erupting partially or not at all, damaging adjacent teeth or increasing the risk of infection. Though some people never have issues, most patients unfortunately develop impacted wisdom teeth that cause pain, inflammation, and sometimes even infection. These teeth require extraction so that the remainder of the teeth and the health of the mouth as a whole is not harmed. Though the wisdom tooth extraction process is routine, it differs depending on the situation of each patient, and our care is always personalized to your needs to ensure a more comfortable experience.
The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process
Putting off wisdom tooth extraction can be harmful to your oral health and removal becomes more challenging with each passing year. Wisdom teeth extraction is one of the most common procedures we perform at our office. Beginning with our cone beam CT scan, we can determine the type of impaction and the best treatment plan. Deep impaction or complicated positioning requires the surgical expertise of an oral surgeon like Dr. Aaron Quitmeyer to ensure the most beneficial outcomes. We will always walk you through the surgical process, in addition to providing pre-op and post-op instructions. The complexity of surgery and your level of anxiety will determine our choice of sedation.
Symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth can include:
- Swollen, tender gums
- Red or bleeding gums
- Jaw pain or swelling
- Chronic bad breath
- Unpleasant taste in the mouth
